WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
Our ECS interfaces with every biological system within most of nature’s species. From the brain to every single cell in your body, the ECS is involved. This system consists of a series of receptors that are configured only to accept cannabinoids (below), which "work" with these receptors to correct and maintain optimal health. Here are a few examples:
• The endocannabinoid system is responsible for feeding/craving behavior. This is the system that determines feeding behaviors and addictive type behaviors
• The endocannabinoid system is responsible for the immune response. This is how your body deals with injury and includes, the inflammation response, the pain response, stem cell cuing, and the deflammation process.
• The endocannabinoid system is heavily involved with body regulation. It controls the body’s cycles and clocks. So hormone regulation, female cycles, the sleep cycle are all heavily influence by the endocannabinoid system.
WHAT IS A CANNABINOID RECEPTOR?
The scientific study of cannabinoids is still in its infancy, and the estimated twenty thousand scientific articles written within the past 15 years have just begun to shed light on the subject.
Large gaps likely exist in our current understanding, and the complexity of interactions between various cannabinoids, cell types, systems and individual organisms have challenged scientists to think about physiology and health in new ways.
Here’s what we do know:
Cannabinoid receptors are present throughout the body, embedded in cell membranes, and are believed to be more numerous than any other receptor system. When cannabinoid receptors are stimulated, a variety of physiologic processes ensue.
Researchers have identified two cannabinoid receptors: CB1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs; and CB2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures. Many tissues contain both CB1 and CB2 receptors, each linked to a different action.
The body actually creates its own cannabinoids (similar to those found in cannabis and other plants). These naturally occurring cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors within your body and brain. Think of these receptors like little "locks" and your body's cannabinoids fit naturally into these locks like "keys".
Together, they make up your endocannabinoid system which can influence your appetite, pain, inflammatory response, sleep, stress, mood, memory, motivation and more.
